From the beginning of its existence, Epheus was an important urban center in the Asia Minor region. In the Hellenistic period, the famous philosopher Heraclitus lived here, and when the city was part of the Roman Empire and at the same time the capital of the province of Asia Minor, also many Saints stayed in the city. John the Apostle and Saint Paul. Ephesus was also an important center of Christianity. However, what made the city famous throughout the ancient world was the famous Temple of Artemis – one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Saint John spent the last years of his life in Ephesus. He died around 100 AD. and he was buried here. St. John Basilica was built in the 6th century AD. by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. The Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople served as a model for the builders. The builders used elements from the nearby Temple of Artemis – one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. St. Basilica John soon became an important destination for pilgrims from all over the Christian world. It was believed that the dust from the Apostle’s grave had healing properties.
